Our Center’s Educational/Outreach Core has two goals. The first is to educate our IGD patients, their families, referring physicians, and investigators about the power of using genetic testing in the diagnosis, clinical management, and genetic counseling of their condition. This education will take place via the expansion of our Center’s genetic website to disseminate the findings of our genetic research program, its resultant scientific articles, and other clinically relevant material to these groups and the sharing of all of our research data via the NICHD DASH program. The second goal is begin to build a pipeline of promising biomedical scientists wishing to build careers in human genetics research. This goal will be addressed by providing unique onsite translational experiences to young investigators seeking careers in translational genetics in the human.

Specific Aims:

  1. To educate referring physicians with potential referrals, IGD patients, their families, and other investigators about the increasing importance that genetics can now play in their diagnostic evaluation, genetic counseling, prognosis, and long-term care.
  2. To provide these same audiences with access to the results of our genetic research efforts with full support and state-of-the-art testing and genetic counseling;
  3. To share these same findings with the larger genetic research community via the NICHD DASH program and other open source websites to advance the research in this field;
  4. To provide onsite, career-changing educational and training experiences for basic scientists and clinical investigators seeking to gain firsthand experiences in translational research in human genetics within an NICHD Center of Excellence in Translational Research.
